Sherbrooke, September 11, 2024 — The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) is urging residents, particularly seniors, to be cautious following multiple reports of fraud attempts in the MRC du Granit area.

Fraudsters have been employing various schemes, often impersonating financial advisors, to trick victims into surrendering personal information. In one common tactic, they ask individuals to place their debit card and PIN number in an envelope and leave it in their mailbox.

The SQ emphasizes the importance of verifying any requests before taking action. Families of vulnerable individuals can play a vital role by checking if their relatives have received suspicious calls recently.

Key tips to avoid falling victim to fraud include:

Never give money to someone whose identity hasn’t been confirmed.
Don’t share personal information with anyone who can’t prove their legitimacy.
Be wary of individuals who pressure you into making quick decisions.
Double-check stories by contacting family members or friends.
The SQ noted a suspicious vehicle was seen near several fraud sites. For more information on fraud prevention, visit the SQ website or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.centreantifraude.ca.
