SHERBROOKE, May 12th 2026 – The Sherbrooke Police Service is stepping up efforts against a growing wave of telephone fraud schemes targeting vulnerable residents, particularly seniors.
In response to the increase in these incidents, the SPS has introduced “Project NIP,” a new initiative bringing together investigators, police officers, and community partners to help identify and stop fraudsters operating in the region.
Police say the project will focus on coordinated daily efforts aimed at protecting residents from scams that often involve emotional manipulation and financial theft. Authorities have chosen not to release additional operational details in order to protect ongoing investigative strategies.
According to police, scammers typically contact victims by phone while pretending to be a family member in distress, someone involved in an accident, or even a police officer conducting an urgent investigation. Victims are then pressured into handing over money, bank cards, or personal banking information. In some cases, suspects arrive directly at the victim’s home to collect the items.
The Sherbrooke Police Service is urging residents to remain cautious and to speak with elderly family members about the warning signs associated with these scams.
Police remind the public never to provide banking information or PIN numbers over the phone and to avoid sending money to unknown individuals under pressure. Residents are also advised to independently verify any suspicious claims by contacting a trusted relative or their financial institution directly.
Authorities emphasize that legitimate businesses and organizations do not request payments through prepaid gift cards.
Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or victimized by a fraudulent scheme is encouraged to contact the Sherbrooke Police Service immediately at 819-821-5555.
