Sherbrooke, February 13, 2025 – Due to the rise in influenza outbreaks and the high circulation of respiratory viruses, a new directive now mandates the use of masks for staff and visitors in specific healthcare facilities across Estrie.
Where is Mask-Wearing Mandatory?
Masks are required upon entering the following units:
- General and specialized care hospitals (CHSGS): emergency rooms, day medicine, chemotherapy centers, radiation oncology, dialysis, and inpatient mental health units.
- Rehabilitation units: intensive functional rehabilitation units (URFI), transitional functional recovery units (UTRF), short-term geriatric units (UCDG), and the Estrie Rehabilitation Center (CRE).
- Long-term care centers (CHSLD), senior homes, and alternative housing (MDA-MA).
This measure is in effect until further notice.
Guidelines for Caregivers and Visitors
- In long-term care and mental health facilities, caregivers must wear a mask only when moving outside their loved one’s room.
- Masks will be available at the entrance of each designated facility.
“By implementing this measure, we are collectively helping to slow the spread of respiratory viruses and protect our most vulnerable populations.”
— Marie-Pierre Plante, Deputy Director General | PCI Division (DGA-PSPGS)
Sherbrooke, the Most Affected Area
Sherbrooke has been particularly impacted in long-term care settings, but the situation remains concerning across the Estrie region, justifying this new mandate.
Where is Mask-Wearing Not Required?
Masks are not required in the following settings:
- Cafeterias, outpatient clinics, day centers, offices.
- During the provision of care in other CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS facilities (continuous assistance residences, Val-du-Lac, Estrie Addiction Rehabilitation Center, CLSCs, etc.).
Recommended Preventive Measures
With a rise in cases across Quebec, it is essential to maintain good hygiene habits: ✔️ Wash hands regularly 🧼
✔️ Wear a mask if experiencing symptoms 😷
✔️ Keep distance from vulnerable individuals ↔️
✔️ Get vaccinated to protect yourself and others 💉
This directive aims to protect healthcare workers and vulnerable populations, while limiting the spread of respiratory infections in the region.
