ESTRIE, June 9, 2026 — The federal government’s new $755 million investment in sport is expected to expand access to recreation, strengthen grassroots programming, and support athlete development across Canada.

The funding package includes resources for national sport organizations, community participation initiatives, and athlete support programs. Federal officials say the investment will work alongside major infrastructure spending, including a recently announced agreement providing more than $3.5 billion for community infrastructure projects in Quebec. New and upgraded facilities such as arenas and swimming pools are expected to help increase opportunities for youth participation in sport.

The package also includes $45 million dedicated to athlete support and mental health services. The funding is intended to promote safe and inclusive training environments while providing athletes with greater access to mental health and career-development resources.

Meanwhile, Community Radio Day on June 6 highlighted the role local stations play in connecting residents, sharing regional stories, and promoting local culture. Community broadcasters continue to serve as important platforms for youth engagement, media literacy, and civic participation.

Discussions are also ongoing regarding long-term funding models for nonprofit community radio stations, with federal consultations examining ways to improve stability and support for local media organizations.
