Four Downtown Sherbrooke Intersections Soon to Be Safer

Sherbrooke, November 11, 2024 – The City of Sherbrooke is set to make safety improvements to four intersections on King Street, between Wellington and Saint-François streets. These upgrades, carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MTMD), aim to enhance pedestrian safety while keeping traffic flow smooth.

First Phase: King Ouest and Wellington

Starting Tuesday, November 12, traffic lights at the King Ouest and Wellington intersection will be adjusted to allow left turns from both Wellington North and South onto King Ouest. An exclusive pedestrian phase will be introduced, with automatic activation during the day and evening to reduce waiting times for those on foot. Additional audible pedestrian signals will be installed, and existing signals on the east side of King Street will remain in place. During construction, traffic lights will be deactivated, and flaggers will direct traffic; some delays are expected.

Next Phases

The following intersections will also see improvements:

• King Ouest and des Grandes-Fourches: traffic lights will be reprogrammed to increase pedestrian safety, and the west-side crosswalk will be removed.
• King Ouest and du Dépôt: reprogrammed traffic lights.
• King Est and Saint-François Nord: adjustments will restrict the left lane on Saint-François North to left turns onto King East only, eliminating the option to go straight onto Saint-François South.
