Dry Spring Conditions Raise Forest Fire Risk in Eastern Townships

Eastern Townships, April 2026 — Officials and SOPFEU are warning of extreme fire danger conditions across parts of the Estrie region as dry spring weather continues ahead of full vegetation growth. Despite lingering snow in some areas, dead grass and brush remain highly flammable, increasing the likelihood of fires, particularly near residential zones.

The Société de protection des forêts contre le feu considers this pre-season period is one of the most volatile times of year. Prevention and communications advisor Isabella Gariépy notes that many spring fires are caused by human activity, including backyard burning and discarded cigarette butts, often occurring close to homes.

Residents are encouraged to use alternatives such as composting and municipal collection services instead of burning debris. Officials also recommend checking current conditions, fire risk levels, and active incidents at www.sopfeu.qc.ca or through the SOPFEU mobile app.
