SHERBROOKE, April 21, 2026 – Rosalie Dupont, co-coordinator of the Table d’Action Contre la Pauvreté de l’Estrie, warns that finding affordable housing in Sherbrooke has transitioned from a local challenge to a “mathematical impossibility” for many residents.

 

Despite a surge in regional construction, Dupont argues that the current emphasis on private market development fails to address the needs of those at the breaking point. With standard one-bedroom apartments now frequently exceeding $1,000 per month, the crisis is disproportionately impacting three specific groups: the city’s 40,000 students facing frequent moves, seniors on fixed incomes who report “heartbreaking” choices, and single-income households struggling to absorb rising costs.

 

The organization is calling for a systemic shift toward dedicated social housing and cooperatives rather than private incentives. To demand immediate government action and systemic prevention, a regional mobilization and strike are scheduled for May 1st and 2nd.
