The ETSB issued an update Feb. 17 stating that it was informed on Feb. 13 that files exfiltrated during the December breach had been posted online. The files were taken from certain school board servers and contain personal information concerning staff members and possibly parents and students. The exact nature of the exposed information is still being determined.
When the intrusion was first detected shortly before 9 a.m. on Dec. 18, the board immediately shut down its entire computer network as a precaution. At the time, officials said the most sensitive databases — including student identity systems and payroll — had not been breached.
The cyberattack was traced to a Russian source. The ETSB says it has strengthened security measures and continues to work with government cyber defence authorities while analyzing the leaked files and informing affected individuals.
