This radio report features an exclusive post-election interview with Marie-Claude Bibeau, the former Liberal MP for Compton–Stanstead who has now been elected mayor of Sherbrooke. Speaking live from her election-night headquarters at Le Siboire on Dépôt Street, Bibeau shares her reaction to the win and outlines her immediate priorities as she transitions into municipal leadership.

Bibeau describes the moment as exciting and energizing, noting that she was surrounded by family, volunteers, and supporters when the results were announced. She emphasizes that the victory comes with responsibility and says she looks forward to collaborating with the newly elected council and municipal staff. Bibeau highlights the respectful tone of the mayoral race, saying Sherbrooke had “four serious candidates” who debated ideas rather than personalities. She frames the campaign as a model of healthy democratic engagement.

During the interview, Bibeau explains the key difference between federal and municipal politics: proximity to everyday life. She points to subjects like parks, natural areas, cycling paths, and water treatment plants as evidence that municipal decisions are “very close to basic” daily concerns. Her first task as mayor will be meeting individually with each city councillor to learn their priorities and ensure everyone has a meaningful role in shaping Sherbrooke’s future. One major file awaits immediately: council must adopt the 2026 municipal budget before Christmas.

The second half of the program recaps Eastern Townships election results. In Sherbrooke’s Lennoxville borough, Bertrand Collins was elected borough president with 30.85 per cent of the vote; François Gilbert won the Fairview District with 49.54 per cent; and Claude Charron won the Uplands District with 60.45 per cent. In Stanstead Township, Jean-Pierre Berger was elected mayor, while in Brome Lake, Lee Patterson won the mayoralty. North Hatley re-elected Marcella Davis Gerrish with 64.99 per cent support.

The show offers a clear, factual look at election night across the region and Bibeau’s plans as Sherbrooke’s new mayor.
