$25 billion delivered, $7.5 billion more announced as tariff uncertainty weighs on Eastern Townships businesses

EASTERN TOWNSHIPS, September 10th 2026 – Federal Members of Parliament from across the Eastern Townships met with regional businesses on September 1 to discuss the impact of tariffs and ongoing trade uncertainty.

The meeting, initiated by Sherbrooke MP Élisabeth Brière, brought together businesses from sectors including steel, aluminum, forestry and electronics. Participants discussed the effects of tariffs on operations, supply chains, markets and competitiveness.

Brière said uncertainty was one of the main concerns raised by businesses, particularly when planning future investments. She also pointed to access to liquidity as another challenge, with some businesses needing additional funds to manage changing costs and maintain operations.

Brière said the federal government has provided $25 billion in support for Canadian workers and businesses, with an additional $7.5 billion in measures announced.

She said businesses are looking for support programs that are accessible and delivered quickly, including grants, non-repayable contributions and loans.

As tariff conditions continue to develop, businesses across the region are assessing the effects on investment, operations and employment.
