Sherbrooke, December 18, 2024 – A large-scale operation led by the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) in collaboration with other police services has resulted in 35 arrests and 15 searches linked to over 30 incidents of gun violence.

The operation, carried out in multiple regions including Côte-Nord, Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean, Quebec City, and Gaspésie, involved hundreds of officers working from early morning. Arrested individuals face charges ranging from kidnapping and armed assault to arson and drug trafficking.

Chief Inspector Michel Patenaude emphasized the operation’s success, highlighting collaboration with correctional services and other partners. “Public safety remains our priority. Violence stemming from territorial disputes over drug trafficking is unacceptable, and we are committed to addressing these issues head-on,” said Patenaude.

2024 Gun Violence Efforts

Throughout 2024, the SQ intensified its actions against organized crime, resulting in over 320 arrests and significant operations targeting illegal firearms. Analysis by the Quebec Center for Firearm Detection revealed that nearly half of seized handguns were illegally imported, primarily from the United States.

The SQ also continues to seek public assistance in locating David Trottier Boucher, 25, in connection with a February kidnapping in Saguenay.

Public Involvement

The CENTAURE strategy remains central to the SQ’s efforts, maintaining pressure on organized crime and gun violence. Citizens with information on firearms-related activities are encouraged to contact the SQ at 1-800-659-4264 or via email at cic@surete.qc.ca.
