Sherbrooke, Monday, November 18, 2024 – Starting January 1, 2025, a new vehicle registration tax (TIV) will be applied across Sherbrooke to fund public transit initiatives. The $34 fee, approved by Sherbrooke City Council in May 2024, will be included in annual renewal notices sent by the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) starting this month for those opting for early payment.

The TIV aims to promote sustainable transportation and advance the 2023-2032 Strategic Public Transit Development Plan of the Société de transport de Sherbrooke (STS).

Key Details:

  • Who is subject? The tax applies to privately owned passenger vehicles, including cars, motorhomes, SUVs, and minivans:
    • Seating up to nine passengers.
    • Primarily used for personal purposes.
    • Not requiring permits from the Commission des transports du Québec.
  • Exemptions: The tax does not apply to vehicles used for institutional, professional, or commercial purposes, nor to motorcycles or mopeds.
  • Early Payment Option: Residents planning extended absences from Quebec can pay the 2025 registration fees early at an SAAQ service center as of November 1.
