Sherbrooke, December 11, 2024 – Yesterday afternoon, around 1:00 PM, Sherbrooke police were alerted by a taxi driver about an elderly man who had withdrawn several thousand dollars from the bank and was returning home to hand over the money to someone.

Upon arrival, officers met with the victim. The man had received a phone call claiming that an investigation into counterfeit money was underway and that he needed to provide thousands of dollars, which someone would later pick up.

Minutes later, officers arrested a 37-year-old woman who came to collect the money. The suspect was taken in for questioning and is expected to appear in court today on charges of fraud, impersonation, and possession of false documents.

Beware of Fraudulent Phone Calls:
These scams often target elderly individuals. The scammers impersonate a family member in distress, claiming they need money due to legal trouble or an accident. They then send someone to the victim’s home to collect the cash.

If you suspect you are a target of such a scam, hang up immediately. If you have already fallen victim, contact the Sherbrooke Police Service at 819-821-5555. This matter is currently under investigation.
