Songs across the line at Haskell William Crooks
A unique cross-border gathering is planned for Saturday, March 7 at 11 a.m. at the Haskell Free Library, which straddles the boundary between Stanstead, Que., and Derby Line, Vt. Organized collaboratively by UU Estrie of North Hatley, the First Universalist Parish of Derby Line and the NEK Quakers of Barton, the event will see participants stand on their respective sides of the international line near the large rocks on Church Street.
Vermont-based organizer Mike McCleese, a longtime civil and human rights activist, is coordinating the effort. In this segment, Janet Watson of UU Estrie explains why Canadians will remain on their side of the border and how the gathering aims to express friendship, solidarity and non-violence through recognizable protest songs. Organizers say all are welcome to attend.
