EASTERN TOWNSHIPS, October 27th 2026 –Â Compton-Stanstead MP Marianne Dandurand says her proposed legislation to improve rural cellphone connectivity is moving closer to its final stages in Parliament.
Dandurand confirmed that Bill C-268 has passed its review by the Standing Committee on Industry and Technology without amendments and is returning to the House of Commons for third reading.
Originally scheduled for December, the bill’s final House debate has been moved to early November. Dandurand is negotiating with opposition parties to accelerate proceedings, potentially sending the legislation to the Senate by mid-November.
Senator Réjean Aucoin has agreed to sponsor the bill in the Senate, marking his first sponsorship of legislation originating in the House of Commons.
The bill seeks to improve cellular coverage mapping, establish clearer connectivity standards and prioritize underserved rural communities.
Dandurand also discussed recent federal advertising changes benefiting regional newspapers and ongoing advocacy for community radio funding ahead of the November 5 federal budget.
She remains optimistic about cross-party cooperation, suggesting the legislation could become law by late 2027 if parliamentary proceedings advance smoothly.
