Waterville, March 4,2025 – The Government of Quebec has announced a significant investment of $4,643,100 to support the transformation of the L’Assomption-de-la-Bienheureuse-Vierge-Marie Church in Waterville into a modern, multifunctional community center.
The announcement was made by Geneviève Hébert, Member of the National Assembly for Saint-François, on behalf of Andrée Laforest, Minister of Municipal Affairs. This funding will complement a previous $2,073,000 grant provided in 2023 by the Minister of Culture and Communications, Mathieu Lacombe, under a program aimed at repurposing surplus heritage religious sites.
The renovated site will include:
While the funding announced today is designated specifically for the community center portion of the project, the initiative will revitalize a historical site and enhance public services in the town.
Minister Andrée Laforest emphasized the importance of maintaining high-quality community spaces in small municipalities: “The economic vitality of our regions depends on the quality of life we offer to citizens. This investment will allow Waterville to optimize public services while preserving a building of great historical significance.”
Minister Mathieu Lacombe highlighted the cultural impact of the project: “Quebec’s religious heritage is a valuable asset. By repurposing historic buildings to meet modern needs, we ensure they continue to serve future generations.”
MNA Geneviève Hébert expressed enthusiasm for the transformation: “This project is a fantastic opportunity to breathe new life into an important part of our history while making it dynamic and accessible to all.”
Waterville Mayor Nathalie Dupuis also shared her excitement: “Residents and community organizations have been eagerly anticipating this project. These renovations will ensure high-quality, versatile, and accessible facilities for all age groups for years to come.”
The funding comes from the Municipal Infrastructure Improvement and Construction Program (PRACIM), part of Quebec’s 2024-2034 Infrastructure Plan, which aims to invest over $7.1 billion in municipal infrastructure projects.
Waterville qualifies for a 5% financial assistance increase due to its status as a small municipality.
This initiative also aligns with Quebec’s heritage requalification program, which helps transition surplus religious sites into spaces that benefit local communities.
