Lennoxville, October 8, 2024 – In this episode of Reaching Out to the Community, Derek Bullard speaks with Denis Kotsoros, Executive Director of the Townshippers’ Association, about the challenges facing the English-speaking community in the Eastern Townships. Denis, who took on his role in March 2024, explains that the association is focused on healthcare services, social services, economic development, and creating job opportunities for the community.

One key issue discussed is the decline in the English-speaking population, but Denis clarifies that this trend is not as severe as reported, highlighting how new immigrants are often not counted in traditional population statistics. This topic was explored in depth in a recent Concordia University study, which shed light on demographic changes in the community. He also identifies the aging population and the outmigration of young people as two major factors contributing to a reduced entrepreneurial pool in the region.

Denis emphasizes the importance of grassroots opportunities for local businesses like restaurants and small shops, rather than focusing on attracting large corporations. The association’s goal is to create sustainable job opportunities, particularly for younger generations, to keep them engaged in the region.

Additionally, Denis discusses the growing bilingualism in the community and the association’s programs that foster language skills, especially in healthcare services, for both English and French speakers.
