Sherbrooke, September 6, 2024 – All police services across Quebec, in partnership with the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), will increase their patrols and interventions on September 7 and 8, 2024, as part of a coordinated national operation aimed at quad riders. This initiative targets behaviors that could jeopardize the safety of riders and others. The operation is being conducted under the theme: “On the trails and private lands, ATV riding is done safely.”
Heightened Enforcement Measures
Police officers will be deployed in trail networks, at intersections with public roads, and even during equipment transportation on Quebec highways. They will enforce various laws and regulations, including the Off-Road Vehicle Act, the Highway Safety Code, and the Criminal Code.
Safety Tips for Quad Riders
Always wear a helmet and safety goggles if your helmet does not have a visor.
Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.
Ensure your vehicle’s white headlights and red tail lights are always on.
Cross public roads only where signage allows.
Plan your route ahead of time and check trail conditions using the iQuad app.
Respect private property and obtain permission before entering, or stick to designated trails.
Key Regulations to Remember
Quad riders are subject to the same laws as drivers when it comes to impaired driving from alcohol or drugs.
The speed limit on trails is 50 km/h for all-terrain vehicles.
Riders must adhere to trail signage and, since September 10, 2021, possess a valid driver’s license to ride on public roads, trails, and private municipal land.
Riders aged 16-17 must also have a valid driver’s license and a certificate of competency from the FQCQ.
Safety Remains a Priority
Speeding and impaired driving are the leading causes of fatal quad accidents. In 2023, 24 quad riders died on Sûreté du Québec territory, with 12 of those deaths involving individuals who were not wearing helmets. The use of proper safety equipment, such as helmets, plays a critical role in preventing fatalities.
This operation aims to ensure that all off-road vehicle enthusiasts can safely enjoy their activities across Quebec.
