Sherbrooke, Monday, August 26, 2024 —On August 25, 2024, around noon, officers from the Sûreté du Québec’s highway patrol in the Estrie region intercepted a motorist on Highway 10, at km 111 eastbound in Austin, for excessive speeding and other infractions.

The offender, a man in his forties from Saint-Laurent, was caught driving at 155 km/h in a zone where the maximum speed limit is 100 km/h. This violation resulted in a $509 fine and 5 demerit points. The driver, who was traveling in the left lane, was also tailgating the vehicle in front of him, maintaining a distance of less than 5 meters between the vehicles while repeatedly flashing his headlights. Additional fines of $322 and $111, along with 2 more demerit points, were issued to the impatient driver.

The Sûreté du Québec reminds that speeding is one of the leading causes of fatal collisions and that the risk of being involved in a collision increases when driving above the permitted speed limit.

On average, annually, speed is a factor in collisions resulting in 115 deaths and 420 serious injuries on Quebec’s roads.

The 2021-2026 Transportation Network Safety Strategy, “Human Life at the Heart of Our Actions,” aims to reduce the number of fatal and serious injury collisions on road and recreational networks. Action plans are being implemented in each of the distinct areas: Partnership, Intervention, Awareness, Technology, and Evaluation (PISTE) by the Sûreté du Québec and its partners, to collaborate towards a common goal of making our roads, trails, and waterways safer.
