Lennoxville, November 9, 2024 – Bishop’s Gaiters are AUS champions for the first time in history after a thrilling triple-overtime victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies, capturing the 2024 AUS Loney Bowl presented by Bell with a 25-22 win at Coulter Field. Xavier Gervais’ 25-yard field goal in the third overtime sealed the historic victory, sending fans into a frenzy.
The game delivered high drama in the final moments. Down by three with only 16 seconds remaining, the Gaiters’ Gabriel Royer forced a fumble on Saint Mary’s, setting up a game-tying 16-yard field goal by Gervais with just six seconds left to send the game to overtime. Royer’s clutch play came after a near-miss for the Gaiters, who had fumbled the ball while in field-goal range with only 48 seconds left, seemingly handing the game to Saint Mary’s. However, Royer’s heroic fumble recovery gave the Gaiters a second chance and extended the game.
The back-and-forth overtime saw both teams trading field goals through the first two extra periods. In the third overtime, Royer stepped up defensively once again, making a crucial tackle for a loss on first down, which ultimately forced the Huskies into a 44-yard field-goal attempt that missed left. Taking over, the Gaiters capitalized with a pivotal 18-yard run from David Chaloux, setting up Gervais for his decisive 25-yard kick that secured Bishop’s first AUS title since joining the conference in 2017 and their first overall championship since the 1994 Dunsmore Cup.
