Lennoxville, July 3, 2025 -The Lennoxville & District Women’s Centre (LDWC) has officially launched a new initiative, “Take the Wheel: LDWC Driving License Bursary for Women,” to help break financial barriers for women seeking to obtain their learner driver’s license.

The bursary, unveiled at LDWC’s Annual General Meeting in June, was made possible through funds raised from their successful spring fashion show and additional community donations. It will cover Phase 1 of driver’s education, including theory classes and the cost of a learner’s permit from the SAAQ, for three eligible women.

“Learning to drive literally opens up the world,” said Jennifer Garfat, LDWC President. “For women in rural areas where public transport is limited, a license is key to unlocking access to jobs, healthcare, and independence.”

Former LDWC President Monika Mitchell added, “This bursary is about more than just driving. It’s about empowerment and equity.”

How to Apply

Eligible applicants must:

  • Identify as a woman

  • Live in the Estrie region

  • Show financial need

  • Be ready to enroll in a driving school by Fall 2025

The LDWC, founded in 1981, is a non-profit dedicated to supporting English-speaking women and girls in the Estrie region through advocacy, education, and community support.
