EASTERN TOWNSHIPS, October 11th – A new theatrical production in Sherbrooke is inviting audiences to reconsider courage, conflict and the importance of dialogue by retelling a famous Greek tragedy from the perspective of a lesser-known character.
Ismène, produced by Théâtre du Double Signe, shifts the spotlight away from Antigone, the celebrated figure known for defying authority, and toward her sister Ismène, whose perspective offers an alternative approach to conflict through peace, compromise and dialogue.
The theatre’s artistic director said playwright Carole Fréchette’s work carries a timely message amid growing political polarization and radicalization.
The production features actress Amélia Sargisson in a solo performance in both French and English, marking the company’s first English-language presentation.
French performances run until October 24, with English previews scheduled for October 21 and 22 at Le Grand Espace in Sherbrooke.
Tickets follow a pay-what-you-can model, ranging from $20 to $60, with free tickets available for those needing financial assistance.
The company hopes the bilingual production will also strengthen connections between Sherbrooke’s French- and English-speaking communities.
