SHERBROOKE, May 26th, 2026 — Sherbrooke Mayor Marie-Claude Bibeau says community radio stations continue to play an important role in maintaining local identity and strengthening communication within regional communities across Quebec.

Speaking with CJMQ 88.9 FM ahead of Community Radio Day on June 6th, Bibeau described local radio as a platform that reflects everyday community life in a way larger corporate media outlets often cannot. She noted that stations like CJMQ help residents stay connected to local organizations, events, and neighbourhood initiatives.

The mayor also referenced Sherbrooke’s recent decision to include CJMQ in the city’s community organization support program, recognizing the station as part of the municipality’s broader civic communication network.

During the interview, Bibeau acknowledged the financial and operational difficulties faced by nonprofit community broadcasters, particularly outside major urban centres. Drawing on her previous experience as a federal MP, she said independent regional media often face ongoing funding challenges despite their importance to local democracy and public engagement.

Bibeau added that the city remains open to advocating alongside community media organizations for additional provincial and federal support.
