SHERBROOKE, May 11th 2026 – A major fire prompted a large emergency response Monday morning in downtown Sherbrooke after flames broke out in a commercial building located at 62 Wellington North Street.
Emergency crews were dispatched around 10:00 a.m. on May 11 after reports of smoke and fire coming from the two-storey building. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke conditions and visible flames originating from the basement level.
Authorities confirmed that the building was evacuated quickly and that no injuries have been reported at this time.
Approximately forty firefighters remain on scene working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures. Due to the ongoing operation, Wellington North Street has been closed between King West and Meadow streets, causing traffic disruptions in the downtown sector.
As a precaution, air quality inspections were conducted in neighboring properties, and roughly a dozen surrounding buildings were evacuated during the intervention.
The incident has also affected local utilities. Emergency officials confirmed that power was temporarily cut in parts of the area, with a localized outage still impacting approximately 55 addresses.
Officials indicated that firefighting operations could continue for several hours as crews work to fully extinguish the fire and secure the building.
A press conference is scheduled for 2:15 p.m., where emergency services are expected to provide further details regarding the cause of the fire, the response efforts, and the current status of the situation.
