Saint-Herménégilde, October 24, 2024 – Officers from the Sûreté du Québec in the MRC of Coaticook intercepted a motorist on Rang 9 for driving at an excessive speed in the early evening. The driver, a man in his 40s, was clocked at 175 km/h in a zone with an 80 km/h speed limit.

This serious offense resulted in an $1826 fine, 18 demerit points, and a seven-day suspension of his driver’s license, as mandated by Quebec’s Highway Safety Code for cases of extreme speeding.

The Sûreté du Québec stresses the dangers of speeding, noting that it remains one of the leading causes of fatal collisions in the province. Driving over the speed limit significantly raises the risk of accidents, which each year contribute to approximately 115 fatalities and 420 serious injuries on Quebec’s roads.

In line with its “Transport Network Safety Strategy 2021-2026” titled Human Life at the Heart of Our Actions, the Sûreté du Québec is actively implementing initiatives to reduce fatal and serious-injury collisions. Through its PISTE approach—focusing on Partnership, Intervention, Awareness, Technology, and Evaluation—the police service collaborates with partners to enhance safety across roads, trails, and waterways throughout the province.
