Why A Pizza is closing: A conversation with Ziv Przytyk William Crooks

In this episode of The Pulse of the Eastern Townships on CJMQ 88.9 FM, journalist William Crooks sits down with Ziv Przytyk, a well-known figure in the region’s cultural landscape. Przytyk is the founder of Shazam Fest, a long-time municipal councillor in Barnston West, and the creative mind behind A Pizza, the eclectic pizzeria and arts hub located on Galt Ouest in Sherbrooke.

After seven years of serving slices, hosting jam nights and providing an open door to under served residents, A Pizza will close at the end of December. In this candid conversation, Przytyk explains the circumstances behind the closure, including a major construction project set to begin next door and his own need to step back after years of nonstop community work. He reflects on the pizzeria’s unique role as both a neighbourhood gathering place and an informal food support network, having given away thousands of slices to people in need since 2018.

The interview also explores his decision to pause Shazam Fest until 2027, his plans to refocus on art and community initiatives, and ongoing issues in Barnston West ranging from land-use pressures to public safety concerns. Przytyk speaks openly about municipal politics, the challenges facing rural communities and the importance of younger generations getting involved.

This segment was produced with the support of the Local Journalism Initiative.

Listen in for an inside look at the closure of a local cultural landmark and the future projects of one of the Townships’ most active creators.
