Sherbrooke, January 17, 2024 – An extreme cold weather alert has been issued for the Eastern Townships, with temperatures expected to plummet between -30°C and -37°C due to wind chill. This frigid weather is set to begin Sunday evening and last through the middle of next week, with the coldest periods occurring in the early mornings.
Health officials are urging residents to take precautions, as exposure to these conditions can lead to frostbite in as little as 10 to 30 minutes, or even less in high winds. Risks during extreme cold include frostbite, hypothermia, and exacerbation of chronic cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions.
Authorities are also calling for increased support and tolerance for the homeless population, encouraging public spaces to remain open as shelters during this dangerously cold period.
For those working outdoors, take frequent breaks in warm spaces and be vigilant for early signs of frostbite or hypothermia, such as numbness, pale skin, or shivering.
CJMQ 88.9 FM reminds everyone to stay informed, bundle up, and look out for one another during this cold snap.
