WATERLOO, July 1, 2026 — The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 77 in Waterloo marked Canada Day on Wednesday while celebrating the Legion’s 100th birthday with a day of community events honouring veterans and local traditions.
The celebration included a community breakfast, a flag-raising ceremony, three ceremonial cannon shots, and live music.
Sergeant-at-Arms Guy Normandu, a Vietnam War veteran, said the annual ceremony is an important tradition and that raising the Canadian flag is a sign of respect for veterans. He also highlighted the branch’s support for three local cadet corps, noting that proceeds from the annual Poppy Campaign help fund cadet activities and assist veterans.
Following the flag-raising ceremony, three cannon shots were fired as part of the official Canada Day observance before the afternoon’s entertainment began.
The afternoon featured a performance by the Night Shift Country Band from Stanstead. Musician Melissa Digman said the group was honoured to participate and described the event as a celebration of community, heritage and Canada Day.
Former branch president Michel Lapointe said remembrance remains central to the Legion’s mission. He said members continue supporting veterans through initiatives such as the Poppy Campaign while recognizing military service and community involvement.
