Nearly 500 Pounds of Debris Removed from Lake Memphremagog in Community Dive Cleanup

Lake Memphrémagog, November 3, 2024 – A recent community dive cleanup led by Jacques Tremblay, diver and project manager at Plongée Aqua-Mundo, brought volunteers together to help clean Lake Memphremagog. The event removed nearly 500 pounds of trash from the lake, signaling a promising improvement compared to past cleanups that yielded significantly more debris.

For Tremblay and the Aqua-Mundo team, the motivation behind this cleanup effort was clear: divers love exploring the underwater world but are often confronted with litter disrupting these beautiful environments. This project brought local divers together, many of whom were mobilized through social media and Aqua-Mundo’s network, to join the cleanup efforts around Georgeville Marina.

Trmblay shared that the results of the dive were positive, reflecting growing community awareness about keeping local lakes clean. Although they still collected hundreds of pounds of smaller debris—such as bottles and plastics—Jacques noted that larger, heavier items like concrete blocks and tires, once a major issue, are now less common.

With plans for future cleanups in additional locations around Lake Memphremagog, the team hopes their efforts will inspire more residents to properly dispose of waste and keep the lakes and rivers pristine.
