Background

Sherbrooke, November 29, 2024 – Starting January 1, 2025, Quebec will implement a standardized list of materials accepted in recycling bins across the province, streamlining the recycling process for all residents.

What Can and Cannot Be Recycled

Beginning in the new year, containers, packaging, and printed materials can all be placed in recycling bins, with the following exceptions:

  • Expanded polystyrene (protective foam): To be deposited at ecocenters.
  • Empty aerosols: To be deposited at ecocenters.
  • Compostable bioplastics: To be placed in brown bins.

Management Changes

The provincial organization Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ) will take over the management of recycling collection from municipalities. However, municipalities will still handle local services, including:

  • Collection and transport
  • Public information and customer service

No changes will affect collection schedules or the process for obtaining a recycling bin. In Sherbrooke, Recup-Estrie will continue to process recyclable materials.

Standardized Blue Recycling Bins

ÉEQ is also introducing a gradual transition to blue recycling bins across Quebec:

  • New blue bins will be provided for new addresses or when green bins reach the end of their life.
  • Repairs to existing green bins will remain a priority to extend their use.

Additional Information

This initiative aims to enhance recycling efficiency and sustainability across the province.
